Introduction Traditional procedures for conducting telephone surveys are challenged in today’s world by the popular use of call-blocking and screening services. Problems arise in determining if a telephone number is linked to a sample unit eligible for participation and also in completing interviews with participants. Researchers seek to revise survey methods and find ways to adjust for non-response and the increasing rate of unknown eligibility in telephone surveys. In â€Å"Using Telephone Exchange-Level Data to Adjust For Non-Response: Application in An Establishment Survey,† Williams and Lu suggested using household demographic summary information at the telephone exchange level to decrease non-response bias and increase accuracy in establishment survey results (Williams and Lu 3847). Statement Of The Problem Free Essays

The analyses presented here are based on data representing a diverse group of mainly 18- and 19-year-old college students. The study was conducted in February and March of 2007 at the University of Illinois, Chicago, which is a U. S. We will write a custom essay sample on Statement Of The Problem or any similar topic only for you Order Now urban public research university. 1U. S. News and World Report (2006) ranked this campus among the top 10 national universities as regards campus ethnic diversity, suggesting that this school offers an ideal location for studies of how different kinds of people use online sites and services. The project had the support of the First-Year Writing Program at the university, ensuring that a representative sample of the school’s undergraduate student body would participate. The writing course offered through this program is the only course on campus that is required of all students; thus, enrollment in it does not pose any selection bias. Out of the 87 sections offered as part of this course, 85 took part in the study, constituting a 98% participation rate on the part of course sections. Overall, there was a final response rate of 82% based on all of the students enrolled in the course. In order to control for time in the program, this article focuses on students in the first-year class. The survey was administered on paper instead of online. Relying on an online questionnaire when studying Internet uses could create a bias toward people who spend more time online, given that they may be more inclined to fill out the questionnaire and also, perhaps, more inclined toward higher rates of participation on the sites of research interest. The average survey completion time was approximately 30 minutes. The survey included detailed questions about respondents’ Internet uses (e. g. , experience, types of sites visited, and online activities) and their demographic background. Basic demographic information was measured using standard modes of operationalization. Students were asked their year of birth, and this information was used to calculate their age, which is included in the models as a continuous variable. Male is the base gender category (male = 0, female = 1). Information about race and ethnicity was collected using the U. S. Census Bureau (2000) questionnaire format, and dummy variables are used in the statistical model, with White as the omitted category. Consistent with work by others, parental education was used as a measure of socioeconomic status (e. g. , Carlson, Uppal, Prosser, 2000; Lamborn, Mounts, Steinberg, Dornbusch, 1991; Stice, Cameron, Hayward, Taylor, Killen, 1999). Since asking about household income has limited utility with such an age group (both because students do not know their parents’ income and because those who live in dorms may not know how to interpret â€Å"household†), and since educational level is constant in this group (every respondent is in the first year of college), parental schooling is a helpful measure. This information is included in the model as dummy variables, with some college education (but no college degree) as the base. Both the question about living at home with parents and the question about having access to the Internet at a friend’s or family member’s house is included as a dummy variable, where 1 signals yes to that question, and 0 stands for no. Finally, figures for both hours spent online per week and number of years a respondent has been an Internet user are logged in the analyses, given that an additional hour or year, respectively, likely has diminishing returns as the values increase. The analyses first consider only the core background characteristics of the user (age, gender, race and ethnicity, parental education). Then, a second model includes information about context and experience with use supplementing the core demographic variables. The 1,060 first-year students included in these analyses represent a diverse group of people. 2 Fifty-six percent of the respondents are female, 44% are male. Almost all are 18 or 19 years old, with a mean age of 18. 4 and a median of 18. Fewer than half are White and non-Hispanic. Slightly less than 8% claim African or African-American descent, almost 30% are of Asian or Asian American ancestry, and just under one-fifth are of Hispanic origin. These students come from varied family backgrounds. Over a quarter of respondents have parents whose highest level of education is high school, with an additional 20% whose parents do not have a college degree. While it may seem that sampling from a college population assumes a highly educated group, 25% of first-years at this university drop out of college by their second year (Ardinger et al. , 2004) and fewer than half (43. 6%) will graduate within six years of enrollment (University of Illinois-Chicago, 2004). Unlike many U. S.  colleges, over half of the students at this university commute from home and live with their parents (53. 1%). Baseline access and use statistics (Table 1) for the sample suggest that the Internet is not a novel concept in most of these students’ lives. On average, participants have access to the Internet at over six locations and have been users for over six years. When asked how often they go online, the vast majority report doing so several times a day. They estimate spending 15. 5 hours visiting Web sites weekly (excluding email, chat, and VoIP). While there is certainly some amount of variation in access and use, there are no basic barriers standing in the way of these young adults accessing the Internet. Limits may be put on their uses due to other factors (e. g. , the need to share resources at home, limited hours of access due to employment), but they all have basic access. This suggests that traditional concerns about the so-called digital divide do not apply to these students as regards basic availability of the Internet. Thus looking at such a wired group of users allows us to hold basic access to digital media constant and focus on differences in details of use instead. How to cite Statement Of The Problem, Papers

Julius Caesar is one of William Shakespeares plays Essay Example For Students

Julius Caesar is one of William Shakespeares plays Essay In this essay I will be examining the two funeral speeches; additionally I will be analysing the content of each; and I will be describing why Anthony was more successful than Brutus in swaying the crowd. The funeral speeches are made by Brutus and Anthony, both for the Caesars funeral, I will quickly summarise the events that have happened leading up to Caesars death; Caesar had recently killed Pompey; Cassius becomes worried that when Caesar does become leader of Rome, he will bring it to its knees; Cassius decides to make a conspiracy against Caesar, and begins to persuade people to join it. He manages to recruit Casca, Cinna, Metellus Cimber, Decius Brutus, Trebonius and Caius Ligarus; they then stab him at the Capitol, but they decide not to kill Anthony as they believe he is, But a limb of Caesars, which means that he can only function with Caesar around, and obviously with him dead they believe that Anthony is nothing. We know that Anthony has been successful in conquering the crowd due to the fact that they are all shouting appraisal of Caesar just as they were when he was victorious over the great Pompey and they are already seeking to revenge him. Else where in the text (in the beginning), there is evidence of the Plebeians changing their allegiance when in Act One Scene One, Murellus says to a companion, Why have you changed so suddenly into Caesars favour, when once you were climbing to the top of the house just to catch a glimpse of Pompey. So this is evidence they changed their trust into him because he beat the old and aged Pompey; so it shows how easily the Plebeians change their loyalty from one person to another. We know that Brutus is a good friend of Caesars, this is shown in the text, we also know that Brutus conspired against Caesar from the goodness of his heart, and he had Romes best interests at heart. We also know that he was a republican, so he didnt want a king, which is why he got rid of Caesar; as he thought that he would eventually take the crown and become the monarch of Rome. Anthony is also one of Caesars good friends; in the beginning of the play he is running the Lupercal race, and it is superstition that if a runner touches a woman here infertility will be cured; so Caesar tells Anthony to touch his wife so she can be cured. We also know Anthony is quite high up in the senate so he has power in vital decisions to do with power; he has enough power to offer the crown to Caesar, which was refused thrice, yet Brutus, takes this as ambitious. The conspiracy all started when the crown was offered, Casca was there and reported back to Cassius, he stated that there was something in Caesars eyes that showed ambition. So Cassius took it as a sign and believed that Caesar wanted the crown. Although Anthony is one of the high senators, he still looks up to Caesar as a leader and respects him like a leader, this is shown when the race is going on he says, I shall remember: when Caesar says, Do This, it is performed, so this quote is showing us that Anthony looks at Caesar as a leader because he takes orders from him; before that Anthony addresses him as his Lord. In Brutus speech, his love of Rome comes out again, as he talks to the Plebeians about him only doing what was right for Rome, we know him as quite a cautious character; this nature of his came out in his speech, when he asks the crowd at regular intervals if he has offended them, and when it was silent he would start as he meant to finish. Anthonys speech is flooded with great emotion; this is the way he gets the crowd on his side. .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 , .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 .postImageUrl , .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 , .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256:hover , .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256:visited , .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256:active { border:0!important; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256:active , .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256 .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4f2fe7c57b0983da418333e3bf142256:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Macbeth(c.1607), written by William Shakespeare, i EssayAnthonys personality does come out a little; it is his crudeness which shows the most, as he used sarcasm and irony in the speech to persuade the crowd away from Brutus side. The two speeches varied widely, Brutus gets the crowd with simple persuasion, he does this by explaining to the Plebeians that he did what he did because it was necessary and for the good of Rome; also that he loved Rome as much as he did Caesar. He also uses the question, If any, speak, for him have I offended; this question is used so Brutus can check if the crowd is still on his side. He then pauses, to let the crowd speak, and he gets a positive outlook amongst the crowd. Brutus made his speech effective in persuading the people by using tone and rhetorical devices. Brutus was compassionate when referring to how he loved Caesar as much as Caesars friends of his speech. Brutus was showing compassion on lines 18 20 where he said, If there be any in this assembly, any dear friend of Caesars, to him I say that Brutuss love to Caesar was no less than his. Brutus said this to help the people understand the sorrow he felt inside about the killing of his friend, although he felt bad he doesnt regret his actions as shown on lines 21-22, where he said, I weep for him, but I rejoice for Rome, so this is telling us that he does feel sorrow, but it was necessary for Rome. Anthony uses a different method, he doesnt simply persuade he also used sarcasm and irony (as mentioned previously) with that he says, Brutus says Caesar was ambitious, yet Brutus is an honourable man. Anthony doesnt actually say anything bad about the conspirators until he knew the crowd was with him because he knew that saying dreadful things about Brutus would result in the crowd turning against him. The other major factor in Anthony winning was bringing the body of Caesar in; so Anthony used both physical and mental means in getting the crowd. Another physical thing he used was Caesars will; that was the key in keeping the crowd listening, it was like bait to them. The language used varied considerably, Anthony used words that dug at the Plebeians emotions, and Brutus used words to convince them that he was truly a lover of Rome. What Anthony had to do was praise the conspirators first, because they were the new Caesar in their eyes, and then explain to the crowd what they had done wrong, and each thing that they had done, would have sounded awful, so this in turn led them to go on Anthonys side; as was mentioned before Anthonys entrance is key, because he stirs their emotions when he brings Caesar in, this effectively builds him a strong base on which to build his speech, and this praise for the conspirators is a strong foundation, as if he was to jump straight into the condemning of Brutus, his house would collapse, in this case he would be mobbed by the Plebs and the conspirators would have won. As mentioned before the prop that Anthony uses is a vital one; the prop is Caesars dead bleeding body, which immediately has an emotional effect on the crowd, but they take pity on Caesar, they dont go onto his side immediately as they now believe that Brutus is the new Caesar. The very reason that Brutus went first was why he was so influential on the Plebeians; as we saw earlier in the play the Plebeians were all on Pompeys side until he died, then they switched over to Caesar, then he died and the person to kill him was the Plebeians favourite; so Brutus had that advantage over Anthony before he even started his speech. .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd , .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd .postImageUrl , .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd , .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd:hover , .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd:visited , .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd:active { border:0!important; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd:active , .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5145d16293aa5adcd04c43df45921ddd:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Importance of Biff's Role in Death of a Salesman EssayAnthony on the other hand had a real task on his hands, because not only did he have to actually persuade the crowd, he also had to keep them listening, he was aided slightly by Brutus who asked the crowd foolishly to listen to him, but the other bit was the will, which served two purposes, one was to keep the crowd listening and baited; the other was another major factor in them turning to Caesars side once again, as in his will he gave the Plebeians his wealth and land. An Elizabethan audience would most certainly have appreciated the rhetoric more than a modern audience, due to the fact that the Elizabethans had lessons in rhetoric, so their interpretation and understanding of the speeches would have been much sharper compared to the modern type. I can conclude this essay by giving credit to the author of this wonderful play, William Shakespeare; I am crediting him because I believe that English would not be where it is now if it wasnt for people like Shakespeare.

Tragedy Is Healthy Essay Example For Students

Tragedy Is Healthy Essay Tragedy is one of many very popular types of literature for many years. There were numerous discussions, about whether tragedy is good or bad. Philosophers feel that using the emotional instead of intellect approach is bad. The popular culture also has negative feelings toward tragedy, because optimistic thoughts are more acceptable. However, tragedy may also be healthy. Emotions are natural for every human being; in some situations emotions can help enable the individual to perceive things in another way. For example, using one’s intellect at a funeral type of environment is not suitable, however being emotional and showing sympathy is needed. Another example would be for business people, although intellect is very important toward their decision-making many business people admit that a number of their decisions are from their instincts, hunches, and feelings. Therefore, even in situations where intellect is called for, emotions are never absolutely pushed aside. We will write a custom essay on Tragedy Is Healthy specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now For the popular culture, most stories are made with a happy ending and the only time death occurs would be when a villain is killed. However, when all the stories are made with perfect happy endings they become fairy tales and fantasies. Unless it is stated as a fiction, some tragedy should occur. For example, even though Romeo and Juliet had a very sad ending, it has been one of the most popular love stories from generation to generation. The tragedy is what touches the viewers’ heart, helping them to bring out a rather sensitive side of them. Majority of the movies in popular culture has a similar plot. The good characters will live happily ever after, the prettiest girl is always with the most handsome man, and all villains have bad endings. These stories are good for entertainment and relaxations; however, tragedy may help some people to cherish what they have a little more. For example, when a story such as Romeo and Juliet show that lovers may not always be together regardless of how strong their love is, it may make couples treasure each other more than they already do, because no one knows what type of mishap can occur in the next minute. Although the popular culture prefers to have stories with less tragedy, the viewers’ continue to watch these movies. A rather fmous one would be â€Å"Titanic†, the lover’s are separated by death. If happiness is preferred, then why do these type of movies attract so many viewers? Beside the fact that a certain actor or actress is starring in it, psychologically sad movies are the best movies to watch with another person. An article that asked the public how they relieve their fustration, listed that 74% of the poll chose to cry, and 69% of them chose to watch a sad movie. Therefore, showing one reason why these tragedies are so popular. Most of the tragedy movies are about a couple that can give up anything to be with the person he or she loves, even his or her life. These type of movies, although very depressing, is at the same time very romantic. In the present society, most females will choose to watch these tragedy/love stories because it is about love. In conclusion, using the mind is important for business, education, and many other situations, however, being emotional is healthy for the heart and mind as well. If there is no lost, there will be no hope in further achievements. English Essays
